There are a couple of copies of The Mitre at my parents. Fond memories of the swimming galas and sporting festivals at the school. Also remember in ‘94/‘95 the Hockey Tournament we won in Blantyre, and we were up against schools from other southern African countries!

Bishop MacKenzie produced the best swimmers like Mark Roroberts 👌 and all those of us who went to St. Andrew's were good swimmers. There were boarders at Bishop Mackenzie and it stopped in 1985. From January 1986 the dormitories were turned into classes. After Mr Dunlop came Mr Jack Baker as headmaster in September 1985. I was in Viphya yellow.

I have many memories of this school way back in 1961- 1962 and 1963. I was a boarder and remember that Mr. Sanders was the headmaster at the time....he was absolutely brilliant. I remember school, the brownies, getting my bottom smacked a few times, snakes, a dog with rabies and so many other things...😊

I should have a school report from the 50s, the teacher Mrs Coulter was great. It was a little school, I still remember the day that we gave the road to the school a spray with tar, we were having some high profile visitor.

My wife had been a secretary at BM and had just started her training as a nurse when we first met.
A friend, Ann Brown was headmistress at the Indian Primary School. Ann turned up one day and asked her to be the teacher of Form 1, and under heavy pressure, reluctantly agreed. By the end of day 1 she knew she was a competent teacher and loved being one.

My name is Hendrina Kachingwe. I did my entire secondary school at BMIS from 1994 to 2001, from forms 1 to 6 and I hold very fond memories of the school.
All in all, I loved my time at BMIS and if given a chance to do my secondary school again, I’d definitely choose BMIS!! It’s by far the best memory of my childhood!! 😊

My favourite subject, throughout the years, was English with Ms. Smith. She had this fun way of helping us to remember our spellings, like for onomatopoeia “only eat ice cream at” which signified the letters that came after p in the word onomatopoeia or “i before e except after c” for words like deceive and believe. To this day, I never get these spellings wrong and I have taught my daughter to remember her spellings in the same way.

I also loved art with Mr. Henk Bruggerman (hope I got the spelling right). He was of cheerful character and I always looked forward to his class…I thought of him as a gentle giant! Another subject I loved was Spanish with Ms. Stobbs. I remember one day she made us a Spanish omelette and we ate it in class. I absolutely enjoyed the subject and found it more fun than French.
Unfortunately, over the decades I’ve forgotten most of the words I learnt. My worst subject was maths. I had to repeat the subject for my GCSEs. I hated that subject and still hate it up to now, to the point where if my daughter brings me her maths homework, I’ll be like am sorry my friend, you are on your own on this one. Thankfully, she’s better at it than I was. I look at her maths book and see nothing but Chinese…LOL!

Outside of the classroom, I loved sports and was quite the sporty person back then. I played hockey, squash, badminton, softball, tennis, track and field, football and basketball. I was actually on the girl’s football and basketball teams and remember all the trips we made to KA (Kamuzu Academy) and St. Andrews. They beat us most of the time but it was always fun to travel to other schools for sports competitions!! Honestly, I don’t recall if we ever won...haha!!
Anonymous Student 1994 - 2001
I also enjoyed the school discos. We got to dance with our crush but never had the guts to tell them we liked them…LOL!! The best part of school however, was the field trips. I remember going for a geography trip to Zomba with Mr. Roger Groenink and having fun at Gymkhana club and another trip to Luwawa forest lodge in Mzimba. And then there was the trip to Chimanimani in Zimbabwe in form 3…I’ll never forget that trip. We stayed there for a whole week and had so much fun!

I arrived in Malawi in 1997 to take over the Peace Corps Medical Office.
I realized that BMIS was the only suitable School for Tina.
The Tuckers were running the junior school…..what wonderful people they were.
I knew that I would only stay on with my post in Malawi if the School met the standards I needed for my daughter.
The school and especially Mrs Garside more than met the special needs my daughter needed at that time. I will be eternally grateful to her, and to the vision of the school in hiring her.
There were a few glitches in the first year which a parent teacher committee managed to resolve ! This needed courage which the community stepped up to.

How many cheer songs can you remember?
Doesn't matter what house you were in.
"We are Mulanje and no one can be prouder,
and if you cannot hear us we'll shout a little louder.
WE ARE MULANJE AND NO ONE CAN BE PROUDER,
AND IF YOU CANNOT HEAR UR WE'LL SHOUT A LITTLE LOUDER!!!"
Can you guess which house I was in 😉

Have a wonderful anniversary celebration! I remember with great fondness my time teaching maths from 1990-1992 and I’m happy to report still in contact with several former students from then.

I was at BMIS from 1981-1993, spent a fabulous 12 years, overall it was a great experience. We were the first batch who did the GCSEs in 1993! And if I’m not mistaken it was the school’s 50th year!
Sahil Logart Former Student, 1981-1993

I started at Bishop MacKenzie when I was 4 years old - 1985 - and was removed by my parents and sent to boarding school at 15 years old - 1996. The best music teacher I ever had was Mr Raymond - 2 x favorite history teachers were Mr Jeremy Dunford and Mr Best - best art teacher was Mr Hank - best sports teacher Mrs Hilderbran - and the world's best Headmasters - Mr Burgess and Mr Tucker. The best years of my life were at that school. Does anyone remember Lamik?. He used to do all the school printing on a printing press. The type was always purple.
Tracy Steenkamp Former Student 1985-1986
I enjoyed creative writing all through primary school, library time with Mrs. Jones and Art with Mrs. Holmes. My favourite memories are from afternoon activities and having Mrs. Swart as my class teacher in Standard 5. I appreciate how the extracurricular activities gave me the opportunity to explore my interests outside of class.
I’m currently an English teacher at Hillview High School. I remember how creative and dedicated my teachers were so I try to be the same during my lessons.
